How to (Actually) Delete Your Facebook Account

Facebook may have recently reached the 750 million user mark, but not every single one of the social networking giant's members are necessarily in it for the long haul. Whether because of a concern about privacy, a need to tame their digital distractions or for some other reason, many users would prefer to leave the site and shut down their profile for good.

The trouble is, Facebook really, really doesn't want you to leave. Rather than providing users with an easily accessible "delete" button in their account settings, they instead offer the option to "deactivate" one's profile, which essentially makes it disappear until one log back in, at which point the profile is restored as though nothing ever happened.

Sponsor

As anybody who's attempted to deactive their Facebook profile knows, the company throws up yet another small roadblock by piling on a massive guilt trip in which they display pictures of friends and family and emphasize just how badly all of those people will miss you.

For those who want to actually delete their Facebook account, there is a way, even if they don't make it easy to find.

Back Up Your Facebook Data First

Even for users who have sworn off Facebook for life, there's likely still some valuable content stored in the account, especially for those who have used the site for a few years. Wall posts, photos, videos and private messages have accumulated and you probably don't want to lose those.

Fortunately, Facebook offers an easy way to download your entire profile and its content into a ZIP file containing images and HTML files, which can be viewed locally in your Web browser. The link to download this back-up file can be found by going to Account (in the upper right corner of the page), clicking on Account Settings and then scrolling down to "Download Your Information."

Delete Your Profile

Once you've got everything backed up and you've overcome the crippling guilt Facebook lays on, you're ready to delete your profile and account.

As mentioned, that button is not located in the settings, but rather is buried deep within the site's FAQ. You can access the profile deletion button here. But beware, as the page notes, this action cannot be undone and will permanently delete your profile data. If you're okay with that, go ahead and click the blue "submit" button.

Should you ever change your mind and want to start a new profile, you can easily do so. It doesn't look like Facebook is going anywhere anytime soon.

Bulger to face charges in Boston

Read more about this story from CNN affiliate KABC.

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Captured alleged mobster James "Whitey" Bulger may be moved back to Boston Friday to begin facing the numerous charges of murder and other crimes connected to what authorities say were his days as the leader of the Winter Hill Gang.

Bulger, who vanished in 1995 into lore and became the inspiration for the 2006 Martin Scorsese film "The Departed," was nabbed by the FBI Wednesday night in southern California.

Bulger was arrested with his longtime girlfriend Catherine Elizabeth Greig, 60, who was also charged in the case.

Sporting glasses and a white beard, Bulger appeared relaxed Thursday at a Los Angeles hearing. The FBI says Bulger could be extradited back to Boston as earlier as Friday.

Waiting in Boston will be the indictments he fled in 1995. Bulger, 81, faces 19 counts of murder along with conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, narcotics distribution and money-laundering charges, the FBI said.

Bulger, who was subject of a $2 million FBI reward, had been living in a Santa Monica apartment and was arrested outside it, the FBI said.

The First Father's Day (1910)

Father's Day is a day set apart in many countries for honoring fathers. In the US, UK, and Canada, it is observed on the third Sunday in June. The idea for a father's day originated when Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, heard a sermon on Mother's Day in 1909 and was inspired to create a date to honor fathers like her own, a Civil War veteran. Through her efforts, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane in 1910. When was the holiday made official in the US? U2 Guitarist’s Plans to Build Modest Compound Rejected

Associated PressThe Edge

By Mark Gongloff

If you think it's easy being The Edge, international rock legend, think again. Not only is the U2 guitarist partly responsible for what might be the most widely mocked play in Broadway history, now he cannot even go lick his wounds in the Malibu mansion, er, mansions of his humble dreams.

The California Coastal Commission has rejected his plans to build not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 mansions on a ridge over the ocean in Malibu.

Not all of the mansions will be The Edge's; there are other property owners in the project, identified as "family, friends and business associates," according to the LA Times.

The Edge, born David Evans, has been fighting for more than five years to develop his wee 156-acre plot and has argued that it will be environmentally friendly, once you clear out all the pesky flora and fauna that happens to live there. The LA Times writes:

Evans’ house is planned as a 12,785-square-foot contemporary abode, called “Leaves in the Wind,” so named for the undulating green roof meant to emulate fluttering leaves. A website explains that the five houses were designed to meet the highest environmental standards by incorporating recycled and renewable materials, rainwater catchment systems, solar panels and native landscaping.

The Coastal Commission ain’t buying it:

“In 38 years of this commission’s existence, this is one of the three worst projects that I’ve seen in terms of environmental devastation,” Peter Douglas, the agency’s executive director, said in an interview after the vote. “It’s a contradiction in terms — you can’t be serious about being an environmentalist and pick this location” given the effects on habitat, land formation, scenic views and water quality.”Associated PressThe Edge

The FT Is Sticking It To Apple With A New Web-Based iPad App

Gerald Adler Wrote:
Great!

With a few weeks to go before Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) starts taking a 30 percent cut of in-app tablet subscription transactions, The Financial Times, which has been vocal in its opposition, is taking the bold step of putting its eggs in the web basket.

It has launched a “web app”, which accurately accurately mimics its iPad app in HTML5, allowing it to take new subscribers on the web and, as FT.com itself reports, “bypass Apple’s iTunes Store, Google’s Android Market and other distributors to secure a direct relationship with readers”.

“We’re encouraging our readers to switch immediately to the new FT web app,” the FT says on its sell page, pitching that the web app has “no download”, “no need to visit an app store for the latest version”, “Improved performance” and a “greater range of content”.

The FT had always maintained its successful digital business relies on owning information about and the consumer relationship with its subscribers. Clearly, an impasse has been reached with Apple.

This is a significant and brave switch, because the FT has actually been quite successful with its iOS app. Last year, a tenth of new subscribers to the publisher’s cross-platform paid model came from within its iPad app.

But the FT tells paidContent:UK: “We won’t abandon iOS apps (i.e. we plan to continue to have advertising funded apps where appropriate). And we won’t remove the subscription functionality from the existing FT app on iOS. We don’t know how that is going to play out yet.” According to the FT: “(It) will encourage users to adopt the web app with a marketing campaign, including a week’s free access.”

The FT is not simply falling in with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) as a sop to Apple; this is a strategy to route around Apple itself because the app is “optimised for your iPad and iPhone”.

There is now widespread anger amongst publishers toward Apple, thanks to its intention to claim 30 percent of in-app subscription transactions, give supposedly insufficient consumer data and communicate too little with publishers. One major science publishing group is also expected to snub Apple’s devices and put its eggs in with Google and the web.

Although many other publishers have indeed started going in to iTunes Store on the new terms, for the likes of the FT and Time Inc. (NYSE: TWX) the situation is descending in to a no-win/no-win, as opposed to a win-win.
